How far do actors go to nail the part in a movie? Surprisingly, they willingly agree to massively change their face and body to successfully portray the roles. We have got to admire them for their commitment towards their careers.
Below is a list of some of the most shocking transformations for a movie that an actor or actress underwent.
16. Russell Crowe
In the movie Body of Lies, year 2008, Crowe had to gain 63 lbs to play the role of a fat and troubled journalist.
15. Jake Gyllenhaal
Gyllenhaal had to gain 15 lbs of pure muscle to portray a role in Southpaw (2015). Fun fact: He did 2,000 press-ups a day to achieve those Pecs and abs.
14. Natalie Portman
In her movie, Black Swan (2010), she had to lose 10 lbs of weight from her healthy-figured body to portray a professional ballerina.
13. Charlize Theron
Theron had to play a serial killer for the movie Monster in 2003. In order to portray it perfectly, she gained 30 lbs and had to say goodbye to makeup for a while.
12. Rooney Mara
Mara had to lose 15 lbs and get real piercings, not to mention it was a dozen new piercings, to portray the role in the movie The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011).
11. Milla Jovovich
From her young-looking self, Milla was transformed to an 85-year-old Alice for the movie Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which is dated to come out next year in 2017.
10. Tom Hardy
Hardy had to gain an approximate 40 lbs of fat and muscle to portray his role in the movie Bronson (2008). Then, he gained another 30 lbs, this time, of lean muscle to star in the film Warrior (2011). The 3rd transformation in the image above, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, speaks for itself.

In order to achieve a disturbing physique look for the movie Les Miserables (2012), he had to lose 15 lbs mainly by dehydrating himself.

Fox had to engage himself in circuit training to gain 40 lbs of muscle for his role in Alex Cross (2012) as Picasso.
7. Robert De Niro
Aside from losing 35 lbs of weight, De Niro also spent two weeks as a driver to be a New York taxi driver just to play Travis Bickle in the movie, Taxi Driver (1976).
For a different role, he gained 80 lbs of pure muscle to play a middleweight boxer named Jake LaMotta for the film Raging Bull in 1980. Unfortunately, after this film De Niro suffered from health problems. Because after playing the role of the boxer, the production of the movie was paused for 4 months so that he could gain an extra 60 lbs of fat to play the role of an overweight and aging LaMotta right after his boxing career ended.
6. Matt Damon
Damon had to lose 50 lbs to look emaciated for just a minute of screen time in only one scene in the entire movie of Courage Under Fire (1996). Then, he starred in the film The Informant (2009) to which he gained 30 lbs of fat.
Later on, he lost the 30 lbs of fat and gained 15lbs of pure muscle for his role in Invictus (2009). Hats off to his commitment and dedication.
5. Tom Hanks
To portray a stranded and hungered man in the movie Castaway (2000) he lost 55 lbs of weight. The production was also halted for about a year, so that Hank could grow a real-life beard for the film. Waiting around a year for a beard to grow? That’s determination!
4. 50 Cent
Legendary Rapper 50 Cent, had to lose 54 lbs of weight to play the role of a senior year college student who was diagnosed with cancer for the film All Things Fall Apart (2011).
3. Matthew McConaughey
From his buffed and muscular built, he lost a total of 40 lbs to play the role of a person suffering from AIDS in the movie Dallas Buyers Club (2013).
2. Jared Leto
Another body metamorphosing master is Jared Leto. He gained 67 lbs for the movie Chapter 27 in 2007, lost roughly 40 lbs for his role in Dallas Buyers Club in 2013 and buffed up to gained muscle for his starring role in the Suicide Squad movie recently, 2016.
1. Christian Bale
He is the king of all body transformations and has mastered the skill of body metamorphosis. He has taken roles that required malnourished, muscular, and overweight conditions. His most shocking transformation was for the movie, The Machinist (2004) to which he had to lose 62 lbs. Another defying moment was in his return in the movie, Batman Begins (2005) to which he gained 99 lbs of weight and muscle. It does not stop there as he gained another 43 lbs but this time of pure fat for his role in American Hustle (2013).
