Star Wars Lightsabers have been used in almost all of the Star Wars episodes. They were first introduced in their original 1977 movie New Hope and then have been seen in the other Star Wars episodes. Historically, this amazing sword, that projects colored light, has been the best weapon of choice used by the Jedi Order, though it’s also used by the antagonists characters in the movie, such as the Sith.
There is no doubt why they chose to use the lightsabers, other than they have historical reasons as they have diverse functions. These plasma energy-weapons can cut, burn and melt items. They can even be used as a shield to defend yourself as they can easily deflect matter.
However, every lightsaber varies. So, let’s tackle the top 15 lightsabers (including a darksaber) in the Star Wars franchise. Let’s rank them from the worst to the best lightsabers based on their unique functions and how helpful they are to their respected owners.
15. Ezra’s Star Wars Lightsabers
This lightsaber was built by Ezra Bridger when he was 15 years old. Sad to say, this was built using spare parts from other members of the squad. Ezra tried to assemble this weapon for several weeks, and fortunately he finished it. Since Ezra wasn’t well trained before he became part of the Jedi, some parts of the lightsaber were not that reliable. Indeed, its design was prone to have short-circuit. It was also said that some members of the Jedi order would have never built a weapon like this.
14. Qui-Gon Jinn’s Lightsaber
He built this weapon after he lost his old one during a mission in Telus IV. This lightsaber has micro power cells in the handgrip. It is made up of Kaiburr Crystal and has a cylindrical hilt shape.
Jinn had been using this weapon in almost all of his fights. However, during the return of Anakin to the dark side, Qui-Gon’s lightsaber was not good enough to fight the enemy, instead of rescuing the Galaxy, he died. Only if Qui-Gon Jinn had a hilt!
13. Obi-Wan’s Lightsaber
There were many times that Obi-Wan lost his lightsaber. Awkwardly, he has been unintentionally dropping the lightsaber during his fights. How come? We really don’t know, but possibly, it could have something to do with the lightsaber, or if not, then it’s Obi Wan’s fault. We think he could do with a strap to secure his lightsaber as he dropped it once whilst fighting Count Dooku, twice against Darth Maul, and two more times against Jango Fett.
12. Palpatine’s Lightsaber
Palpatine or Darth Sidious’s lightsaber is unquestionably beautiful with its antique and cool carving. Moreover, a Sith doesn’t really have to use lightsaber since they already have enough power, especially the Emperor. So, it would be horribly unhip for Palpatine to use a lightsaber.
This was built with great craftsmanship, possibly because Lord Sidious was passionate and an artist in creating it. It was even built using Aurodium, Electrum and Phrik Alloy, which is nearly indestructible.
BUT, it still doesn’t fit the Lord as what you really want to see is him break out the lightning.
11. Pre Vizsla’s Darksaver
A dark colored sword? Amazing right? During the fall of the republic, this ancient black colored sword was taken from its original owner, the Jedi Order. Pre Vizsla’s ancestors passed it to their descendants. And, the last one who acquired it was Pre Vizsla.
Its structure is just like any other regular lightsaber, though it’s a bit pointed. Nevertheless, it’s still different as it is black and most the other ones are brightly lit swords.
10. Anakin Skywalker’s Lightsaber
Anakin Skywalker built this when he was 14. Furthermore, shortly before the Battle of Genosis, it got wrecked.
Definitely, luck is not always applicable to all things. However, with the experiences of men who got to hold this sword, we can say that they got hit by the mischief that this lightsaber has. Anakin Skywalker uses it in his battle with Obi-Wan, and ends up a dismembered, charred shell of a man. His son Luke inherits it and promptly gets his hand cut off in his very first duel. (And after that, he receives the devastating news that Vader is Anakin.) Luckily, he was not killed, but to think that it’s his father who did it? It’s still a bad luck.
Also Finn picks this lightsaber up and gets his ass kicked by Kylo Ren, so we can only conclude that this lightsaber has a dark-side that most people can withstand.
9. General Grievous’s Lightsabers
It’s quite some feat to use more than one lightsaber simultaneously. General Grievous fought with four lightsabers at once. Nevertheless, it’s terrible if you can be killed in a very short space of time by a general. Obi-won killed the cyborg in just seconds. Logically thinking the cyborg was using four lightsabers simultaneously he could have done more damage with them but, never send in a machine to do a man’s job!
8. Yoda’s Lightsaber
Most of the swords that we have observed are lengthy, so they can easily rich their enemy. But, with Yoda’s lightsaber, you can say that it’s a bit on the short sides. That’s not good when you are battling with the one who has a longer sword unless you are good enough to survive the duel.
7. Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber
This is the first lightsaber that was constructed by Luke. Since it was his first creation, he built a simple one. But, it worked perfectly when he used it. The weapon’s design was based on Obi-Won Kenobi’s lightsaber, so it’s not that unique. However Luke’s lightsaber color changed from blue to green. It was only changed to green during a fight scene at Sarlaac in Episode VI where Luke’s lightsaber got lost in the blue sky-background.
6. Count Dooku’s Light Saber
As seen during his fight with Obi-Wan, he would always defeat Obi-Wan. He has a curved lightsaber, which he moves effortlessly, and uses his elegant Makashi Technique. The sleight-of-hand works well enough that you don’t even question Dooku absolutely destroying Obi-Wan every time they duel.
But, miserably, during his fight with Anakin Skywalker, he was defeated. Even worse is that Anakin took this lightsaber and used it to behead the Sith Lord and kill him.
5. Kylo Ren’s Lightsaber
It was first seen in the trailer of Star Wars Episode VII. Before the movie even came out, due to its design this weapon was the most unexpectedly controversial aspect of Force Awakens.
It was used to murder Lor San Tekka, a human explorer and a member of the church of the force. Kylo built this weapon when he was with the Knight of Ren and the first order.
It was designed based on the earliest design. It has one main blade with two vents that act as crossguard, and its blade is red.
4. The Grand Inquisitor’s Lightsaber
This double-bladed spinning lightsaber’s blades can rotate rapidly without the exertion of the wielder. This frightened and intimidated the Inquisitor’s enemy. There were times his opponents got out of poise because of its inimitable design.
Additionally, it can also be used as a single blade too. It entirely depends on if it’s in ring mode or disc mode. Amazing right?
3. Mace Windu’s Lightsaber
This is the second lightsaber that was built by Mace. He used his many year’s experiences to build this powerful weapon. It’s made of rare Kyber crystal and the color of its blade is purple. And, yes it’s way cooler than other lightsabers due to it being easily identified in any of the large fight scenes.
Furthermore, it was lost during his fight with Darth Sidious. It fell and was shattered during its landing to the street of Coruscant.
2. Darth Vader’s Lightsaber
Why do all the villains get the coolest stuff? The dark lord of the Sith, Darth Vader, owns this incredible lightsaber. He created this after the clash on Mustafar, where he lost his old lightsaber. He used this to overthrow Obi-Wan. He even cut the hand of his son Luke using it. It’s beyond cool, we know!
This sword was built using Kyber Crystal. This is THE iconic lightsaber that we all love today. Vader’s instantly recognizable red lightsaber kicked off this trend, and it became as much a symbol of his distinctive menace as his gleaming black armour and problematic asthma. Classic!
1. Darth Maul’s Lightsaber
Darth Maul wielded this terrifying lightsaber to kill his enemies, such as the Jedi members; Anoon Bondara, Siolo Ur Manka, Qui-Gon Jinn, Darsha Assant and others. He used it for his master’s numerous missions. In general, Maul had killed a lot of people using this weapon. Darth Maul’s double-sided lightsaber stands apart. Just like its owner, Maul’s lightsaber is both terrifyingly simple as it’s two lightsabers in combined into one. Darth Maul is a red villain who looks like the devil and utterly unique, demonstrating a fighting style unseen anywhere else in the series. And if it breaks, it just turns into a normal lightsaber. As the saying goes: two blades are better than one right!
