Power Rangers is a live action superhero television series and a merchandising franchise which aims to entertain kids, and adults. The show revolved around five superheroes in uni-colored spandex with a mission to stop villains.

The first Power Rangers series debut in the year 1993. It was created by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy. It was so popular that it had comics, films, television series, plays, video games and audio track adaptations. Because of its action-violence concept, the show received a lot of negative criticisms especially from parents.

Yet, it did not stop the franchise distribution and still continues to entertain us to date. As of 2016, the show has produced 23 seasons and two theatrical films. A reboot of the action series is soon to come out in cinemas on March 24, 2017.

Now, that a motion picture is upcoming, the critiques continue to bash the popularly known action series to whether it will still contain inappropriate violence for kids? The question remains if it will follow the footsteps of the once-“cartoonized” films such as Transformers and G.I Joe, which came out more violent and dark on the big screen. Here are some things you might want to know about the upcoming Power Rangers film.

The Trailer – Power Rangers: Discover The Power

The teaser trailer is almost 3-minute long that wets our appetite. It goes to show the main characters and what is clear from the trailer is that they all share one common thing at school, which is being the “unique one”. That’s what bonds them together until one day they go off to a dark place and find something that changes their lives. From then on, things aren’t the same, changes start to happen, things that they cannot explain or understand. They become, lets say… ‘more unique’. They discover powers that help them change the world. The trailer also showcases the much-awaited villain.

“Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat.  Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.”

The Director

Dean Israelite, the mastermind who created the film Project Almanac, will be the same brains and hands to direct the upcoming Power Rangers. Israelite has shared a few thoughts regarding the script that leaves a hint to what the tone of the film might be. He says, “I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way”.

History has been made here as A great collaboration has taken place to make this Power Rangers movie. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who also wrote the big-box hit movies Thor and X-Men: First Class, are the ultimate duo that write the screenplay for the Power Rangers movie. Just imagine, a touch from them both, who wrote the highly successful marvel movies, will be applying their writing skills to create this Power Rangers movie.

The Theme And Concept

A fan-made short film, directed by Joseph Kahn, surfaced on the internet stirring up quite a commotion for the upcoming film. The 14-minute short film consisted of violent and obscene clips to which portrayed the Rangers as rebelling adults. It shows very explicit content which is suitable for adults only.

Scenes included in the short film are; the Black Ranger snorting on some cocaine along with half-naked models while killing Koreans, the Pink Ranger being viciously interrogated and other members of the Power Rangers being assassinated.

Saban Brands, the company who rightfully franchised the Power Rangers are working hand in hand with Lionsgate, have already expressed their vexation towards the fan-made short film. They sent Kahn numerous of notices to take the video down, but eventually decided to let it stay there and ignored it. We can now safely assume that extreme violence and explicit content will not be portrayed in the real Power Rangers film.
