Mad Olympics

Are you bored with basketball or football? Are you all-set with any challenge?

Head to Wales, Uk and experience extreme sports which includes Husband Dragging, Toe Wrestling, and more crazily funny games.

The World Alternative Games is already very famous for its extraordinary and unique sport events.  The first “Mad Olympics” game started in 2012. According to their website:, the idea for the Games was born after it was announced that London would be hosting the 30th modern Olympic Games in 2012. They said that as one of the greatest sporting events on the calendar, it seemed a wasted opportunity not to hold some sort of celebration in Llanwrtyd to commemorate this.

This very creative sporting event garnered success when over 2000 competitors took part in 35 of their events. The World Alternative Games is now held every 2 years in the little Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells.

The 2014 Games was even bigger and bolder with over 60 events lined up for the two-week challenge. The World Alternative Games 2016 is fast approaching. It will run from the 12th until the 29th of August.

Some of the crazy and ‘LOL’ events are as follows:

Zombie Racing

This event was organized to celebrate Victoria Dunn’s first novel, ‘Alice Hearts Welsh Zombies’. The book was written when Victoria discovered Llanwrtyd Wells online while doing her research. Their opening ceremony was Zombie-themed, with green spa water flowing from their Town Centre fountain for two weeks. The main rule for the event is: you MUST be dressed up as a zombie.

It’s the female version of the infamous Wife-Carrying. For this event, the wife has to take her husband from a makeshift bar, drag him bodily up a slippery slope, and get him to do the chores.

Gravy Wrestling

It’s as real as it could be. As what the event name suggests, contestants have to wrestle in a gravy-based or gravy-coloured puddle.

Toe Wrestling

Just like arm wrestling, the difference is you’re using only your feet.

Mountain Bike and Bog Snorkelling

Mountain bike and bog snorkelling is as bizarre as it sounds. So, ride onto your mountain bike then snorkel in the mud. That’s it.

Office Chair Racing

If you’ve ever worked in an office and experienced rolling around on your office chair back and forth, then you have a picture of what this event is about. It is frantic and dizzying. So stretch up your thighs and get ready for a fun race.

Penny Farthing Race

The event involves the penny farthings racing from one end of town to the other and back again at great speed. It is really an amazing sight as they career through Llanwrtyd. Just stick around so you won’t miss the race. But if you’re the adventurous type, then why not start your practice now and join the race in August.

Worm Charming

Accordingly, the Worm Charming Championships have taken place since 1980 and boast a World Record of 567 worms collected from a 3m square in 30 minutes. The International Federation of Charming Worms and Allied Pastimes (it’s real) governs the event and all worms are released safely back into the wild after the event.
