Facts About Right-handed & Left-handed Individuals

Majority of the world population are using their right hand for most of their daily activities. In fact, it is estimated that 90% of the human population are right-handed, while 10% are left-handed or inconclusive. Also, some of the left-handed are incredibly intelligent in many ways. On the other hand, the former also has its own skills that could be developed. Well, it actually depends on what side of the brain is more dominant.

The thought itself that the two parts of the brain carry out varied arrangements is spine-tingling to study. With this, psychologists invest their time to study the function of our right-left hemispheres. Therefore, this article will explain to us what we can do if we are righties or lefties.

The Brain Hemispheres

There are two parts of our brain, the right and left hemispheres. The two parts have different functions. Interestingly, the right controls the left part of our body while the left supervises the right part of our body.

The right hemisphere is uniquely for art and creativity. Separately, the left hemisphere is more on logic and academic. Furthermore, both can be developed to excel on a specific mastery.

Right-brain Functions/Left-Handedness

If you are left-handed, then your right hemisphere is more dominant. Yet, it doesn’t mean that the other part is not responsive. Left-handed are actually better on art, more creative, more imaginative, more aware of music and others. Some people (and the emphasis on some) would say that they have higher IQ compared to the right-handed individuals.

Also, hand-to-eye coordination activities are likely to be done by the left-handed, which include sports. Though some would say that they are unhandy with other things, it’s not really true. The reason is they are not that good in using their right hand. Also, most of the daily things in life, such as doors, faucet and etc., are designed for right-handed people.

Moreover, based on Michael Corballis, Ph.D., a psychologist from the University of Auckland, people who are left-handed are more likely to have schizophrenia. It is in a genetic study that a gene on a chromosome 2 that said to be with an individual who has schizophrenia is also with the left-handed person. This also connects to the findings that they are more imaginative.

Right-brain dominance makes the person more emotional than the other. They are more affectionate of the things happening around them. Furthermore, there are more studies to be done to understand this.

Left-brain Functions/Right-handedness

The dominance of left-brain functions may be seen to right-handed people. Some psychologists stated that several skills can be done by right-handed people than left-handed people. This is mainly because there is a brain part that prevalently functions to them.

The left-hemisphere, as stated above is more on academic, logic and more. For this, most who are right-handed easily develop their language skills. This is the reason why they excel when it comes to academic learning.

Moreover, being organized can usually be observed from them. The tidiness of their environment is a norm to them and you can see this as early as childhood.
Another is that most of them are not very affectionate or emotional. They handle their daily activities, within or without complicated situations objectively. They look at things logically.

What is better?

Though there is more dominant brain hemisphere, it doesn’t mean that one is better and the other is not. Technically, all part of the brain functions well, but one should play more than the other to avoid brain complication. However, it is possible that both parts can be developed. It only needs proper training and application.

In fact, there are other types of handedness, though it’s rare to find. There are few who are mixed-handed or those who are great in using their right hand when it comes to writing, but do well in soccer using left foot. As for ambidextrous, they are capable of performing things using both parts of the body and brain.
